Installation Guide

Engineered Wood Flooring Installation

Professional installation methods for engineered hardwood including floating, glue-down, and nail-down options.

1

Acclimation & Planning

While engineered flooring is more stable than solid wood, proper acclimation remains important for optimal performance.

  • Store flooring in installation area for 48-72 hours minimum
  • Maintain temperature between 60-80°F with 30-50% humidity
  • Inspect all boards for defects before installation
  • Calculate square footage plus 10% for waste allowance
  • Choose installation method based on subfloor type
2

Subfloor Preparation

Engineered flooring can be installed over various subfloor types when properly prepared.

  • Level subfloor to within 3/16" over 10 feet
  • Test concrete moisture: max 3 lbs per MVER test
  • Clean surface of all debris and adhesive residue
  • For floating installation, install underlayment per specifications
  • For glue-down, ensure concrete is properly cured (60+ days)
3

Floating Installation (Click-Lock)

The most popular method for DIY installers. Boards lock together without adhesive or nails.

  • Install appropriate underlayment with vapor barrier if needed
  • Start from left corner, groove side facing wall
  • Maintain 1/4" to 1/2" expansion gap at all walls
  • Angle long side into previous row and press down to lock
  • Use pull bar and tapping block to ensure tight seams
  • Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches
4

Glue-Down Installation

Provides the most solid feel and is required for radiant heat systems and some commercial applications.

  • Use manufacturer-recommended urethane adhesive
  • Spread adhesive with proper trowel notch size
  • Work in sections to prevent adhesive from skinning
  • Press boards firmly into adhesive bed
  • Use painter's tape to hold planks together while curing
  • Wait 24-48 hours before walking on floor
5

Finishing & Care

Protect your investment with proper finishing touches and ongoing maintenance.

  • Install transition moldings at doorways and floor changes
  • Apply baseboards and quarter round to cover expansion gaps
  • Wait recommended time before placing furniture
  • Use furniture pads and area rugs in high-traffic areas
  • Clean with damp mop and approved hardwood cleaner
  • Thick veneer products can be refinished 2-3 times
