Installation Guide

Solid Wood Flooring Installation

Professional installation guidance for optimal results and long-lasting performance of your solid hardwood floor.

1

Acclimation

Proper acclimation is critical for solid wood flooring success. Store unopened flooring boxes in the installation area for a minimum of 3-5 days before installation.

  • Maintain room temperature between 60-80°F (15-27°C)
  • Keep relative humidity between 30-50%
  • Stack boxes flat with spacers for air circulation
  • Check moisture content with a meter before installation
2

Subfloor Preparation

A properly prepared subfloor is essential for a successful installation. The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat, and structurally sound.

  • Ensure subfloor is level within 3/16" over 10 feet
  • Remove any debris, adhesive residue, or protrusions
  • Check for squeaks and secure loose boards
  • Moisture test: concrete max 3 lbs/1000 sq ft; wood max 12%
  • Install appropriate moisture barrier if needed
3

Layout Planning

Plan your installation layout before beginning to ensure optimal appearance and minimize waste.

  • Install perpendicular to floor joists for stability
  • Start from the longest, most visible wall
  • Maintain 1/2" to 3/4" expansion gap at all walls
  • Dry-lay several rows to check color and grain distribution
  • Stagger end joints by at least 6 inches between rows
4

Nail-Down Installation

For solid wood flooring over wood subfloors, nail-down installation is the preferred method.

  • Face-nail first row 1" from edge, then blind nail
  • Use 2" cleats or staples at 4-6" intervals
  • Use a pneumatic flooring nailer for consistent results
  • Tap boards together firmly before nailing
  • Top-nail last 2-3 rows where nailer cannot reach
5

Finishing & Maintenance

Proper finishing and ongoing maintenance will protect your investment and keep your floor beautiful for decades.

  • Fill nail holes with matching wood filler
  • Install transition moldings and baseboards
  • Wait 24 hours before walking; 7 days before furniture
  • Use felt pads under furniture legs
  • Clean with hardwood-specific cleaners only
  • Refinish every 10-15 years as needed
