Surface Preparation

A properly prepared substrate is essential for tile longevity.

  • Ensure substrate is clean, dry, and structurally sound
  • Check for level - max 1/8" variation in 10 feet
  • Apply waterproof membrane in wet areas
  • Use cement board over wood subfloors
  • Prime porous surfaces before tiling

Layout Planning

Plan your tile layout before setting any tiles.

  • Find center point of room or wall
  • Dry-lay tiles to check appearance
  • Avoid narrow cuts at edges
  • Plan for symmetrical appearance
  • Mark reference lines with chalk

Setting Tiles
