Installation Guide

Tile Installation Overview

Basic installation guidance for ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tiles.

1

Surface Preparation

A properly prepared substrate is essential for tile longevity.

  • Ensure substrate is clean, dry, and structurally sound
  • Check for level - max 1/8" variation in 10 feet
  • Apply waterproof membrane in wet areas
  • Use cement board over wood subfloors
  • Prime porous surfaces before tiling
2

Layout Planning

Plan your tile layout before setting any tiles.

  • Find center point of room or wall
  • Dry-lay tiles to check appearance
  • Avoid narrow cuts at edges
  • Plan for symmetrical appearance
  • Mark reference lines with chalk
3

Setting Tiles

Use appropriate setting materials and techniques.

  • Select mortar type based on tile and substrate
  • Use proper trowel notch size for tile format
  • Apply mortar to substrate and back-butter large tiles
  • Set tiles with slight twisting motion
  • Use spacers for consistent grout joints
4

Grouting

Proper grouting completes the installation.

  • Wait 24 hours after setting before grouting
  • Choose sanded or unsanded grout based on joint width
  • Work grout into joints diagonally
  • Clean excess with damp sponge
  • Buff haze after initial cure
5

Sealing & Maintenance

Protect your tile installation for lasting beauty.

  • Seal grout with quality penetrating sealer
  • Seal natural stone before and after grouting
  • Clean with pH-neutral tile cleaner
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives
  • Reseal grout annually in wet areas
